Ei, Ei, Ei... VERPOORTEN
'Ei, Ei, Ei... VERPOORTEN, ob hier und allerorten' this advertising slogan (roughly meaning 'Hoity-toity VERPOORTEN, here, there, and everywhere' and using the congruence between the German exclamatory phrase 'Ei' and the German word for 'Egg' , i.e. 'Ei' ) has probably been heard by every German-speaking European several times over the years. But did you know that this song originates in the hot Samba tune of 'Ay, ay, ay, Maria, Maria from Bahia', which was originally composed by the grandseigneur of French chanson, Paul Misraki (1908-1998)?
' Ay, ay, ay, Maria, Maria from Bahia'
To the fiery rhythm of Maria from Bahia the people of Germany were dancing all through the Fifties. Interpreters such as Rene Carol, the Medium Terzett, or the Three Travellers kept the catchy tune alive well into the Sixties. Naturally that popular refrain 'Ay, ay, ay, Maria, Maria from Bahia' instantly sprang to mind when in 1961 VERPOORTEN assigned an ad writer from Cologne to develop an effective value slogan: The ad writer used the consonance of the Brazilian 'Ay!' with the German 'Ei' and only needed to find a rhyme on VERPOORTEN. Thus 'Ay, ay, ay, Maria, Maria from Bahia' became 'Ei, Ei, Ei VERPOORTEN, ob hier und allerorten'.
The English Version
When in the year 2000 an English version was to be written, the reference to the egg, which works fine in German, had to be abandoned. 'Egg, Egg, Egg' would have only served to produce a lame joke. So the English Version got a completely new text: 'I, I love VERPOORTEN, come hear me, when I'm calling' is the way you might have heard VERPOORTEN’s slogan.
Who was the composer Paul Misraki?
Paul Misraki (1908-1998) wrote 183 songs and is considered the grandseigneur of the French chanson. Josephine Baker, Edith Piaf, Yves Montand, and Juliette Greco became stars with the help of his melodies. 143 movies owe their music to him, among them films by many well-known directors such as Orson Welles, Roger Vadim, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, and Luis Bunuel. Misraki discovered the Samba rhythm and the song about that very Maria from the Brazilian city of Bahia (today's Salvador) during a stay in Brasil; in precisely the same country that also birthed the origin of egg liqueur.
