From avocados to eggs...

The history of a classic liqueur

The original inhabitants of the Amazon region in the Portuguese colony of Brazil, the Tupo-Guarani Indians, once made an alcoholic drink based on avocados. In the 17th century, colonists imported the avocado drink and the recipe to Europe - the trees, however, did not thrive in our climate. But how could they replace the avocado?

The solution was the egg yolk, which has a similar taste and appearance. In 1876, Eugen Verpoorten developed his special recipe - delicious VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL egg liqueur is still produced according to that recipe today.

Sincerely, William VERPOORTEN

1. Sampling

The freshly delivered grade A eggs are unloaded here every day. The eggs are then sent to the company's own laboratory for sampling.

They are typically approved for processing within 24 hours. Of course, all of the other high-quality ingredients in our recipe are also subject to strict controls.

2. Laboratory

2. Laboratory

All fresh eggs are checked for freshness and perfect quality using highly sensitive laboratory equipment. Only these are used in our VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL egg liqueur.

The entire manufacturing process and the subsequent production steps are monitored and constantly checked by our employees in the ''Quality Assurance Department''.

3. Egg cracking

Key steps in cracking our eggs:

Separating the yolk / white
After approval by our laboratory, the fresh eggs are cracked in-house, which is a special feature within the industry. This involves a further visual inspection and assessment by our experienced employees, while state-of-the-art cracking machines separate the egg yolk and egg white.

The white of the egg is delivered to the sweet and confectionery producers as a valuable raw material. It is used to produce chocolate kisses, cream fillings, and meringues, for instance.

The eggshells are composted and sent back to the fields for soil enrichment.

4. Tank storage

4. Tank storage

The carefully selected ingredients in our VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL egg liqueur are gently combined in stainless steel mixing tanks.

Egg yolk, high quality, extra-fine filtered alcohol, crystallized, refined sugar and other special ingredients make up the VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL family recipe - a recipe that has remained unchanged since 1876.

Freshly produced VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL egg liqueur is then stored in stainless steel tanks.

There, the classic yellow liqueur rests and matures before it is gently filled into a variety of bottle shapes and sizes.

The glass bottles are produced from recycled glass.
... our contribution to sustainable material usage.

5. Filling

Filling, labeling and recipe card dispenser.

Bottles are filled on highly modern and powerful filling lines.

New bottles are checked once again before filling, then sealed, finished and packaged in a fully automated process.

The bottles also come with attractive recipe and mixer ideas.

Further information

Shelf life & storage

European law does not require an expiration date (EXD) be marked on alcoholic spirits like cream or egg liqueur. Due to the relatively high alcohol content, the liqueur cannot spoil. Its fresh taste may, however, decline over time.

VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL egg liqueur should be stored in a cool and dark place if possible. The best place to store it is in the refrigerator (including unopened). A bottle with the original seal intact may be stored for around 1 to 2 years with no loss of quality. Once opened, please consume the bottle within six months. Store it in the refrigerator when not in use (standing vertically).

Additives

VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL is natural, which is why our brand name product uses no food additives such as dyes, stabilizers, emulsifiers, antioxidants, thickening agents, aromas, or preservatives.

Allergens / milk protein / lactose

VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL contains no food additives such as dyes or preservatives (sulfite). In addition, it contains no dairy products such as milk protein or lactose, no grain products such as wheat protein or gluten, and, except for the egg used (chicken egg), no other animal products from cows, pigs or chickens, nor any fish or seafood products.

VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL contains no nuts, parts of nuts or nut products, no vanilla, no spices, no cocoa or yeast and no legumes or legume products.

Alcohol content / nutritional values table

Typically, the alcohol content of spirits and other alcoholic liquids is stated as a “% vol.” This indicates the percentage (based on 100) of alcohol volume in comparison to the overall volume of the product. Therefore, 30% vol means: that there are 30 ml of pure alcohol (ethanol) in 100 ml of a product bearing this label.

The EC Spirits Regulation specifies a minimum alcohol content of 14% vol. for egg liqueur. For quality reasons, the VERPOORTEN family recipe specifies an alcohol content of 20% vol.
